The Armed Forces Day committee recognizes the past and present day contributions of the U.S. military during an Armed Forces Day celebration May 16 at Cheyenne's Frontier Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The formal tribute to the Armed Forces will begin at 11 a.m. when the mayor and governor's proclamation will be read. In addition, an American flag that flew over Iraq will be presented.

There will be a POW/MIA presentation by the first sergeants association, a flag folding ceremony by the base honor guard and posting of the colors by the patriot guard.

There will be indoor and outdoor static displays and exhibits that include helicopters, military working dog demonstrations, USAF honor guard drills and military vehicles.

All of this will be put on by the U.S. Air Force, Wyoming Army and Air National Guard, Veterans organizations and many other agencies which support the military community.

There will be indoor and outdoor demonstrations aplenty and activities for people of all ages. The 67th Army National Guard band will provide music throughout the day. There will be a Hall of Honor with displays from the Wyoming Guard Museum and the USAF Living Legends.

The first Armed Forces Day in 1950 replaced separate celebrations held by the individual services.

The tradition continues today as people recognize the contributions of the military and show support for the men and women who are deployed around the world and in combat zones preserving our safety and security everyday.
