More than 100 Warren Airmen gathered at the base flag pole Sept. 11 to commemorate the tragic and heroic acts that occurred during the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and a field near Shanksville, Pa.

"The base wanted to dedicate a moment to recognize and honor the people who not just lost their lives on this day but, too, all that rest in the events' wake," said Capt. Daniel Feliciano, 90th Force Support Squadron.

The ceremony began promptly at 4:15 p.m. The event began with a reading from Senior Master Sgt. Sean O'Marra, Warren Fire Department, who gave a brief summary of the Sept. 11 events.

Later, Col. John Boyle, 90th Mission Support Group said a few words, paying tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in the events and continue to fight in the antiterrorism arena.

Chaplain (Maj.) Kevin Browne followed with a statement, saying "God bless these men and women, and God bless the U.S."

At the end of the speeches, the crowd took a moment of silence to remember those who have fallen in the wake of the events.

Chief Master Sgt. Tammy Elliott, 90th Missile Wing command chief said these memorials are important to continue because America must not forget the severity of the events that occurred on this day, just eight years ago.

"If we don't remember it with dignity, then the bad guys win," she said.

The event concluded with a formal military retreat, which included a ceremonious lowering of the flag and a three-volley gun salute performed by the Warren Honor Guard.
