Navy at Warren: Helping local reservists Published June 1, 2007 By Melissa Morgan 90th Space Wing Public Affairs intern F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo. -- Among the many historic, red-brick buildings lining Randall Avenue, one stands out. Although it may look like any other building around the base, it is occupied by the U.S. Navy. The Navy Reserve headquarters here consists of seven full-time staff members who support to about 70 Reservists in the Cheyenne area. The Reservists visit the headquarters for health checkups, uniforms, travel orders and almost anything related to their service. The Cheyenne detachment had two locations since its inception in 1942 before joining the Warren community. Every state in the United States has at least one centrally located Navy Reserve headquarters so Reservists can stay in their hometown after joining. The Reservists meet one weekend a month and two weeks a year for training. Next to the headquarters is another building used by the Navy. It is their school house used for training and educational purposes. There is a large, open area in the basement that they use when all the units gather. It includes a classroom for each of the units. The Reservists generally spend most of their time in the latter building and only visit the headquarters periodically or when they have a problem. Although the Navy uses the buildings, both are still owned and maintained by the Air Force. "We have a great working relationship with the base," said Navy Chief Petty Officer Michael Coppinger. "Although we don't interact much, it isn't really necessary because of the nature of our work is so different." For more information on the Navy Reserve, call 773-6458.
