Warren Outdoor Recreation prepares for fall, winter events

F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo. --  The days are getting shorter and colder. The leaves are changing color and the distinct smell of fall is in the air. All the signs are present for Warren Airmen to get ready for fall and winter sports.

Warren rests on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and its location makes it a winter-sport enthusiast's ideal destination.

Outdoor Recreation has a busy fall season. Events range from a trip to Denver for a Colorado Rockies game during Military Appreciation Day to a historic railroad tour Oct. 6, and even a pumpkin patch trip Oct. 13.

ODR offices are currently in a transition phase, switching gears from summer to winter activities.

All skis must go through calibration and binding checks and all other winter gear must be adequate to meet customer needs. ODR sells ski-lift tickets and even offers season passes that are already on sale.

"Many Airmen might not know that there are only two ski shops in Cheyenne and we are home to one of them," said Terri Ammons, 90th Force Support Squadron. Mrs. Ammons and the rest of the outdoor recreation office are taking on the challenge of getting ready for a busy season.

Some winter events include ski trips to Jackson Hole, Wyo., various outings to Colorado ski resorts, snow shoeing adventures, snowmobile expeditions and trips to the annual Snofest in Keystone, Colo., in January.

"Last year was our biggest year we've ever had at Snofest," said Mrs. Ammons. "It gets bigger and bigger every year."

Front Range bases like Warren, Buckley Air Force Base, Colo., Peterson AFB, Colo., Air Force Academy and Fort Carson Army Post, all participate in Snofest at discounted prices.

ODR continues rental services throughout the year for winter and non-winter outdoor gear.

"If somebody wants to go camping in the middle of winter, we wouldn't mind getting out a tent and heavy-duty sleeping bag for them," Mrs. Ammons said.

The ODR offers programs for not only active-duty members, but other groups of military members and their dependants as well.

"[ODR] serves a very diversified group of people," she said. "Many retirees, guard members and civilians don't know they can come here."
