Warren's Freedom Hall and Independence Hall Fitness Centers began a shoe policy Dec. 17, 2007.

The policy states patrons intending to use fitness facilities must hand carry the shoes they will work out in and change into those shoes before using the fitness centers.

These areas include basketball courts, racquetball courts, spinning room, aerobic room, cardio and weight areas, and the indoor track.

This policy applies to all authorized fitness center users, regardless of duty status.

Customers who do not bring shoes to change into will be asked to leave the facility.

Many people have been angered by this policy. At both fitness facilities, the fitness staff strives to provide a safe and sanitary environment for all patrons to enjoy, and the shoe policy is a reflection of this.

By changing shoes, users are potentially saving the Air Force thousands of dollars in equipment replacement and maintenance costs.

Patrons adhering to this policy create a sanitary environment by not bringing hazardous debris that damage the wooden floors or track objects that damage the expensive cardio equipment.

By following the policy, the patrons themselves are providing the safe and sanitary environment.
