Members of Air Force Global Strike Command's F. E. Warren Air Force Base will soon have a new resource to assist them in giving up their addictions to tobacco.

The 90th Medical Group and Warren's Health and Wellness Center will begin offering four week long Fresh Start classes beginning Oct. 18 from noon to 1 p.m.

The Fresh Start classes are a part of a program sponsored by the American Cancer Society and will be led by volunteer support.

While there are other forms of assistance, Maj. Michael Calnicean, 90th Medical Support Squadron, says he thinks the group environment will be the most helpful.

"We're hoping to give members of the Warren community a better way to give up their tobacco addictions," Calnicean said. "The class is better for those individuals quitting because when you're in a group setting you share your addiction with others, there's a better chance for success when you quit with others."

As of this year, Warren ranks among the highest in smokers assigned under the command.

Throughout the Air Force, 23 percent use some form of tobacco, among AFGSC, 27 percent use tobacco. At Warren 24 percent use tobacco, 15 percent smoke cigarettes and 7 percent use smokeless tobacco.

"By reducing tobacco use here we are also reducing health costs," Calnicean said. "We're also increasing our people's health and increasing our base's productivity."

The purpose behind the Fresh Start program is to provide education, support and assistance. The Great American Smoke-Out, taking place Nov. 17, is another opportunity for tobacco users to find support in quitting.

"Our goal is to make this class available to everyone on base," Calnicean said. "When you're ready to quit and you want to quit, that's when you will be the most successful."
