This past winter was intense in Cheyenne with above average snowfall and colder than normal temperatures that left Warren members with a type of, well, sickness. No, it's not life threatening, although some may argue that it is. The sickness is not acknowledged by medical experts and is called the infamous cabin fever.

Symptoms of CF include constant staying indoors, excessive movie watching, over snacking and an irritating itch to get outdoors in warm weather and do something fun. The good news about CF; there is a cure.

Warren's location allows service members to enjoy the great outdoors and soak up the sun, and the outdoor recreation center is the perfect place to get those plans in full swing.

Since the snow of the Rocky Mountains doesn't melt off until about mid-summer, winter sports are enjoyed well into the spring season.

"We run a full service ski shop here," said Peter Somontes with the Warren Outdoor Recreation Center. "Our shop is also in the transition from winter activities to spring and summer activities."

With outdoor recreation' s last-of-the-season Snowy Range trip March 31, they have many upcoming opportunities to get outdoors and see what the area has to offer.
A trip to Elitch Gardens amusement park in Denver April 21 for Joining Forces Military Appreciation Day is a day-long trip with discounted ticket prices. It includes a catered lunch and free return tickets for either September or October.

Another notable outdoor recreation event was the last ski trip to Steamboat for the season. Active-duty military members skied for free and outdoor recreation provided transportation for $25.

"Every ski trip that we took this season has been full," Mr. Somontes said. "The sport is really taking off."

Although the ski trips have been full, the overall participation level has been down in the past year.

For the summer season, outdoor recreation is planning many adventurous trips like white water rafting, hiking, camping and trips to amusement parks like Water World and the Renaissance Festival in Larkspur, Colo.

Outdoor recreation allows service members to map their own adventure with self-guided events that let participants choose what they want to do, where they want to do it and with whom.
