Stop the smoking sensation by taking smoking cessation Published Sept. 24, 2010 By Airman 1st Class Dan Gage 90th Missile Wing Public Affairs F. E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo. -- The Health and Wellness Center here offers many programs for Airmen to improve their physical well being. One way Airmen in Air Force Global Strike Command can improve their health and show individual responsibility for mission success, is to not use tobacco products, and stop using if they currently are. The HAWC has a few different options for those looking to give up tobacco, including "Fresh Start" tobacco cessation classes and follow up support groups held every Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Classes last six weeks and usually start every quarter. One-on-one sessions are also available as needed, along with alternative support groups such as the 1-800-QUIT NOW hotline. Medications to help get through the discomfort are also available through the HAWC and Family Practice. "It's not a cookie cutter process," said Tom O'Brien, 90th Medical Operations Squadron. Everyone is different and has to be dealt with as individuals, he added. Mr. O'Brien is working to make these services more readily available to those working here. "I think it's very important that when someone is ready to quit, they get that service right then and there," he said. "I would like to be able to offer this to squadrons and organizations on site," Mr. O'Brien said. Some people work different hours, and it's difficult to take time off to come to the HAWC. It'd be easier to have facilitators within the organizations, he added. Overall, Warren has the smallest percentage of tobacco users in AFGSC according to data collected through personnel health assessments, Mr. O'Brien said.
