Warren’s new recycling center Published Nov. 24, 2010 By Airman 1st Class Dan Gage 90th Missile Wing Public Affairs F. E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, WYO. -- The recycling center opened in a new location, Building 948, 7600 Booker Road, this year. The lean-to structure of the facility shows remnants of Warren's coal conveyor building; a recycling center born from recycled materials. Opened on Nov 1, the new Air Force Global Strike Command recycling facility is equipped with a large bailer for cardboard and multiple recyclable hoppers. The new center can handle a variety of materials, such as household goods, including electronics and scrap metal. Along with the location on Booker Road, there are 12 dumpsters around base designated for cardboard drop-off. Although the new location just recently opened, the recycling program at Warren handled a total of 621 tons of material in fiscal year 2010. The centers new location is another step towards bigger plans for the recycling initiative here. "Our goal is to have a fully functioning recycling center to where we process our own materials and sell our own commodities," said Tammy Notch, pollution prevention manager. "The goal of all qualified recycling programs is to be self sufficient, funding wise, and to make a profit," she added. The facility and materials are in place, the center is now in need of more participation from the base community in order to see the profit. The amount of recycling in base housing is still low, said Dave Ewaliko, quality assurance evaluator. Although it is highly encouraged, a mandated recycle policy will increase waste diversion. "Once we begin making profits, a certain percentage can go to morale, welfare and readiness; it can go towards funding projects," said Mrs. Notch. "It's more than just environmental cleanup. The rewards also go back to the base community," Mr. Ewaliko added.
