The 101 critical days of summer safety campaign starts Memorial Day and ends Labor Day.

The campaign is the biggest of the year, and the wing safety office staff thinks it is important to keep safety in mind during this critical time.

The critical days of summer have been recognized by the Department of Defense and the Air Force as one of the most hazardous times of the year. This is a time when people tend to forget about safety while they are enjoying the summer weather and having fun.

In reality, this is a time when everyone needs to increase their safety awareness on and off duty and look out for each other.

If someone plans on leaving the local area for leisure, ensure someone else knows where you are going in case there is an emergency.

Make sure to get plenty of rest when traveling to avoid accidents, injury or death. Don't travel long distances after a full workday, and allow plenty of time to arrive to the destination -- making rest stops every two to three hours is advised.

One way to avoid injury is to take precautions prior to any activities. Before engaging in any physical activities, be sure to stretch, dress appropriately and drink plenty of water.

Read all owner manuals prior to using new equipment so that you don't become the next mishap.

Bottom line, use common sense and know your limits.

Remember, summer events and social gatherings may lead to alcohol use. If you drink don't drive. Always have a designated driver and a plan on how to get home.

Supervisors and commanders make time to brief your Airmen on safety this summer.

Everyone can make a difference this summer by being effective wingmen and watching out for co-workers, family and friends. With everyone on the same team, it will lead to the right track to success.

No matter what's planned for this summer, wing safety is here to encourage every Airman to stay safe in this high-risk season.

Don't let inattention, fatigue, alcohol or failure to use a seatbelt cause you to be the next mishap this summer.

Have fun during 101 critical days of summer, and be safe.
