Leaders are often asked to talk about management, leadership, morale, esprit de corps or to share a few war stories of the good old days from a personal perspective. Well, the truth is, everybody wants to know about money.

The best advice I can give Airmen in today's Air Force is have that back-to-basics approach to technical discipline. Know your job better than anyone else, and know the job of those Airmen sitting on the other side of counter providing support services to you and every other Airman in Air Force.

Knowing the rules and options of services afforded to you can prove helpful and financially rewarding when you practically apply them to your next permanent-change-of-station move. You don't need to lie, cheat or steal; you just need to crack the books and educate yourself, plan for your out-processing and complete a few more forms of paperwork. The time you spend will help you defray out-of-pocket expenses in the end.

The 90th Logistics Readiness Squadron personal property processing office has implemented the defense personal property system. DPS is a new system that now adjusts personal-procured-moves vouchers based off of best value carrier rate on file, rather than the semi-annually updated rate solicitation guide.

This change can have a significant impact on your monetary allowance. Be mindful of this update when planning your move. Remember to ask about a partial personally-procured move in conjunction with a government-arranged move. If you are driving to your destination or plan to mail some items there ahead of time, a partial PPM move will help recover costs as well as possibly turn a profit. It is highly recommended you come into the personal property office for an estimate and to discuss eligibility requirements before making your decision to commit to the PPM program.

Personal property is located in Bldg. 1284, Room 230. Its hours of operation are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Air Force members interested in performing a PPM move can review Attachment 14 of the Air Force Supplement to the Joint Federal Travel Regulation www.e-publishing.af.mil/shared/media/epubs/JFTRV1-JTRV2_AFSUP1.pdf. Here, you will find detailed rules governing the PPM process. More information on PPM moves and the overall personal property movement process can be found in the JFTR located at www.defensetravel.dod.mil/perdiem/trvlregs.html.

The money you earn will help defray the out of pockets expenses of your next move if not turn you a little profit. You are not going to get rich, but you won't be poor either.

The DoD has implemented a new Web portal to provide even more information regarding the move process. You can view the portal at www.move.mil. For questions please contact the personal property processing office at 773-3824.
