Is it possible to have a non-ranking club in a world where rank is an everyday part of life?

Rank, it's a part of our everyday life. Our spouse's are referred to by rank, for most of us it's on the front of our houses', in fact, it's a part of most everything we do on a military installation.

I don't know about you, but I can rattle off my husband's rank, duty phone and last four without even thinking about it.

I think in the military world these have to be the most frequently asked questions.

So, is it possible to have an organization on a military installation where rank is not a factor? I say, "Yes."

The Warren Spouses Club has been doing it successfully for several years now. We are a combined spouse's club where rank does not define who we are or what we do.

I firmly believe that spouses, regardless of the rank of their military member, are equal.
We've all sent our spouse to the field, temporary duty assignments or watched them deploy to war-ravaged countries for undetermined lengths of time.

At some point we've all been a "single parent" trying to fix a broken car, vacuum, lawnmower, washer, or keeping the home fires burning, with a cheerful face, while crying ourselves to sleep at night.

We know each other's pain. We are equal. We are the military spouse.

I not only invite, but challenge spouses who have yet to attend a WSC event to come check us out.

On average, there are about 100 WSC members each year, which is interesting when you consider how many spouses there are living here at Warren, and Wyoming Air National Guard and within the local community.

As a club we are always striving to find new ways to reach out to the spouses and this year is no different.

At the moment we are working toward making as many of our socials "no cost" as possible.

We are also looking at ways to provide complimentary childcare for at least half of our socials. I know that sometimes coming up with an extra $5 and a babysitter can be a real challenge. I've been there.

I want this year to be just as great as the previous ones, and in order to make that possible, I am going to need your help. Please share with me your thoughts, comments, suggestions or concerns.

I am always available by e-mail or cell phone and want to know what you have to say. What would you like to see in your WSC?

See you soon.
