I was never a big Star Trek fan, but I did enjoy watching the Next Generation series. You know, the one with Captain Picard, not Kirk.

In just about every episode, Captain Picard would prepare his crew for a mission and would ultimately get underway by giving the crew the order to engage.

With that simple word, the Enterprise and her crew zoomed off toward their destiny.

Engaged is a great descriptor of our Air Force and the other branches of the armed forces today.

Our country is engaged globally against those who would choose to do us harm.

Each of us are engaged daily in providing for this Nation's and her allies' defense. It is indeed a busy time.

Engage is an action. Whether it's inducing one to participate, entering into contest with or bringing people together, leaders, supervisors, coworkers and subordinates must engage with each other on a daily basis.

This type of interaction is a necessary part of communication but often never cuts below the surface. The three definitions I previously mentioned go beyond the surface and, in my opinion, get at relationships. People are social creatures and we all benefit from social engagement.

A major function of the 90th Force Support Squadron is to provide quality of life services for the Warren community. As such, we are focused on creating opportunities for you to engage with your troops, coworkers, friends and family.

There are multiple opportunities to participate and induce others to participate. From adventure trips including snow skiing, hiking, mountain biking and kayaking to automobile enthusiasts, woodworking and arts and crafts, there's something for just about everyone.

If entering into contests is more your style, I encourage you to check out our intramural sports programs including basketball, softball, football and soccer. Go golfing, bowling or challenge your friends to a friendly game of paintball or water polo.

If you're a gamer, bring your friends to Ground Zero in the basement of the Trail's End Club for some video gaming or a cultured game of Crud.

The Communibrary offers a more family atmosphere and also includes video and board games.

Finally, if you are looking for an opportunity to bring people together, there's no better place than the club where you can enjoy lunch on a daily basis. The lounges are open every Thursday and Friday night where you can enjoy your favorite beverage, snacks, a game of pool and some good ole' social interaction.

Finally, if you have an idea or activity you would like to see offered, I encourage you to engage me.

So what are you waiting for? Get your crew together, pick your mission and engage.
