The 90th Maintenance Operations Squadron here shed its old name and donned the newly-created title of the 790th Maintenance Squadron recently.

The name change on Sept. 30 lays to rest the few remaining MOSs, with the 91st at Malmstrom AFB, Montana, and 341st MOS at Minot AFB, North Dakota, likewise renamed and acquiring the histories of the 791st and 741st MXS respectively. However, the 790th MXS is a brand new name that has never been used.

“It is a name change only and does not affect the mission or any day-to-day jobs,” said Major Jacqueline Sartori, 790th MXS commander. “This ties ICBM maintenance units more closely to aircraft units in the Air Force.”

MOSs, in aircraft wings were deactivated several years ago, and up until now, the only MOSs left were in ICBM wings, she added.

Sartori elaborated that the new designation would also bring closer ties to aircraft maintenance squadrons through standardizing the use of language with the rest of the Air Force maintenance community.

“Our MOS had many back-shops, which is similar to what maintenance squadrons in aircraft have,” Sartori said. “This ties us to them and aids in commonalities and language.”

The histories of the now-inactive MOS designations are being preserved for potential reactivation in the future; just like the 791st MX Sand 741st MXS were reactivated.

This is the start of a new chapter for the newly named 790th MXS, one in which they will create a new emblem and new traditions.
