The second-annual Matthew S. Schwartz Memorial Polar Plunge took place in Cheyenne's Sloan Lake Jan. 4, 2014. The event is named for an F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., 90th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance technician who was killed in action while deployed to Afghanistan Jan. 5, 2012.

Staff Sgt. Andrea Rasmussen, 90th CES, estimated 60 people braved the 16-degree weather to jump or dive into the icy water raising $2,847 to benefit the EOD Warrior Foundation. The Foundation's Web site said they provide financial assistance to and support wounded EOD personnel, and the families of those wounded or killed.

Tech. Sgt. Schwartz's widow, Jenny Schwartz, expressed hope that the plunge will continue as an annual event.

"It seems to be growing -- there's more people, more teams then last year," she said.
