Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, issued an Air Force-wide challenge last month: to grow the most impressive mustache possible (within the guidelines of Air Force Instruction 36-2903) during the month of "Mustache March."

Welsh threw down the gauntlet Feb. 20 at Air Force Association's Air Warfare Symposium saying, "I'm putting the smackdown on you guys."

Mustache March is an Air Force tradition in honor of three-time ace pilot Brig. Gen. Robin Olds. The legendary pilot sported an equally legendary mustache -- extravagantly waxed, grown in flagrant defiance of military regulations, and said to be "bulletproof."
F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., has never been the type to turn down a challenge, so mustachioed Airmen could be seen in every organization.

Beset on all sides by obstacles such as itchiness, repulsed loved ones and the desire to be free of a teenager-'stache, many Airmen persevered to the end of the month.

Here is a look at some F.E. Warren mustaches.
