Approximately 100 runners competed in the 36th Annual Buffalo Stampede here July 19.

The Buffalo Stampede consists of concurrent 5K and 10K races along F.E. Warren streets, allowing Airmen, their families and people from the surrounding community to engage in some friendly competition and promote fitness.

Participants in the Buffalo Stampede also have the opportunity to stay and learn more about F.E. Warren's history and mission at Fort D.A. Russell Days, said 1st Lt. Alex Foos, 320th Missile Squadron missile combat crew commander.

Noelle Savage, an oil-company field engineer intern from Michigan, learned about the race from Cheyenne Frontier Days information pamphlets, and signed up once she heard about it. She is a runner for her alma mater, Michigan Technical University, she said.

It was Savage's first time visiting a military installation, and her impression was a good one.

"I actually thought it was great," she said. "It was pretty and it was a fast course, which is nice."

The race was coordinated by the 320th Missile Squadron'as Big Red Buffalo Booster, Foos said. However, it took a lot of people from various organizations to make it a success.

"Thank you to the [90th] Munitions Squadron and [90th Communications Squadron] for providing the cannon and the [Public Address] system, and Col. Jones, [90th Missile Wing vice commander], for kicking off the race," he said.

In addition to helping people stay fit, the race is a chance for civilians to become more familiar with a military environment. Next year, anyone interested will have another chance to sign up.
