Approximately 40 runners competed in the first F.E. Warren SAPR Awareness 5K Run here April 24, 2015.

The Awareness run was a mix of runners and walkers speeding along the streets of Warren, allowing those involved to engage in some friendly competition and show their support for Sexual Assault Prevention and Response.

The event was coordinated by the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator office with the help of volunteers from various organizations.

"[This run] helps bring awareness and bring people together," said Master Sgt. Angela Clancy, 90th Missile Wing SARC volunteer victim advocate.

Along with the volunteers, the group that gathered in support was diverse and came for a multitude of different reasons.

"I'm a survivor and that's why I ran this," said Patricia Chabala. "I'm glad they did this, we need a lot more awareness on this base."

Another runner, Eric Irizarry, 90th Medical Operations Squadron and first to complete the race, said he ran to help make everyone realize the importance of the program and the seriousness of the issue.

"It's for a good cause and I enjoy running," Irizarry said. "This is a way to inform the community, while bringing us all together."

Irizarry was the first male to complete the run and Dora Joyner was the first female to finish.

"When people come together they see they aren't the only ones who support the cause," Clancy said.

The SARC office plans to host this run annually and looks to increase base and community support and understanding of SAPR.
