F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. -- Since June, the 90th Security Forces Squadron has been reshaping how they enforce laws on F.E. Warren Air Force Base.
The men and women of the 90 SFS pull gate duty, patrol the base, and respond to calls; but now the squadron is taking a different approach.
Giving a smaller flight of personnel the specialized training to hone law enforcement specific skills, the law enforcement flight is a team to reckon with.
“Our guys have all gone through a two-week course that gave them all the basics of law enforcement. It was taught by myself and other members from the 90 SFS. We also had legal come in and teach for a day,” said Tech Sgt. Tyler Thomas, Noncommissioned officer in charge, Security Forces Investigations. “We had someone give them intoxilyzer training and then after all of this, there will be opportunities to go to a post certified school and become post certified officers.”
The team is now the sole flight responsible for patrols and responding to calls across the installation. This is beneficial for the force when disseminating information regarding crime trends and where to better focus resources.
“This section, some of the guys came from the gate, some came from the weapon storage area, and some come from other bases where they had a law enforcement background; but these guys are the main law enforcement force for the base,” added Thomas. “The guys at the gate and the guys at the WSA; if they are able to be posted on the road, then there will be backup forces for our LE squadron, but 90 SFS are the main responders to all base incidents.”
