Military members get to educate the community on their mission and do some discounted shopping May 19 during the Armed Forces Day celebration at Frontier Mall.

Sponsored in part by the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers members of all services discounted prices, prizes and refreshments at multiple stores in the mall by presenting their military ID cards at the time of purchase.

"Armed Forces Day is another event where our Cheyenne community shows its great support for the military," said Maj. Tim Zacharias, 37th Helicopter Squadron.

Multiple military organizations in the local area, including some from Warren, will have information booths and static displays to inform shoppers of the local military missions and capabilities. Among other things, Warren is providing a UH-1N Iroquois helicopter static display, explosive ordnance disposal display, military working dogs demonstration, honor guard and a payload transporter static display.

"It's an opportunity for the 90th Space Wing to display its mission and capabilities," Major Zacharias said.

The Army National Guard plans to provide a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter static display.
"Airmen can see what folks in the other branches of the military are doing. That's including the Guard and Reserve," said Chuck Seniawski, the MAC's committee chair for the Armed Forces Day celebration.

"One of the highlights is the one-hour concert from a portion of the 67th Army band," Mr. Seniawski said. "They're supposed to be pretty neat."

A banner will be posted for people to write messages to service members overseas. Once the banner is full, the MAC will give it to a deploying service member to deliver.

The formal opening ceremony takes place outside the mall on the west side of Dillard's at 11 a.m. with a proclamation, flag folding and a POW/MIA remembrance service.

"I encourage people to take advantage of this opportunity and see what is offered to them at the mall," Mr. Seniawski said.

The first Armed Forces Day took place May 20, 1950. President Harry Truman and Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson wished to unify all the separate service days into one celebration after the services came under the recently created Department of Defense.

Armed Forces Day is held to acknowledge and honor all military members for their service, educate civilians on the military's role in civilian life, show what kind of jobs the military performs and allow the military to show state-of-the-art equipment to Americans.
