Warren’s library is making some changes Published Oct. 15, 2007 By Lt. Col. Carleton Hirschel 90th Force Support Squadron commander F.E. Warren AFB Wyo. -- Many people on base have heard that the library closed Oct. 1. The truth is the base has been forced to operate the library in a caretaker status. As of Oct. 1 library hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. The library staff no longer checks out any materials. Books, CDs and DVDs that have been checked may be returned, but materials will only be available for use in the library. The cuts became necessary when 90th Space Wing was directed to reduce funding service contracts. Priorities of eligible programs to include mission and quality-of-life programs were determined at that time. The Warren Library was selected for elimination to meet this reduction mandate. Along with the library's closure, the base significantly reduced custodial services, recycling contract services, sports and fitness programs, chapel musician hours, cable TV and the family services coordinator staff, also the base supply self-help store closed to meet the mandated reduction. The base community will still receive an acceptable level of library service through the new Laramie County Library and other resources. Combining Internet access with the interlibrary loan program provides access to other military libraries. Warren's library assets and services will be redistributed to various base agencies; e.g., Internet access, videos, music, and children story reading can be made available in the base community center, while CLEP, DANTES and other education materials can be made available in the base education center. Currently, a package on the library closure is being staffed up to Air Force services and at this time a final decision has not been made on a permanent closure of the library. If funding becomes available in the future, the library may be able to stay open.
