Oscar-01 earns 90th SW MAF of the year award

F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. --  The 321st Missile Squadron missile alert facility at Oscar-01 earned the 90th Space Wing MAF of the Year for 2007.

The inspection is a top-to-bottom check of the entire facility. The inspectors look at everything the facility managers maintain, check the kitchen for cleanliness and inspect what occurs in the capsule.

"The inspection is very detailed," said Tech. Sgt. Trenady Offermann, senior facility manager. "They check everything from cleanliness of the entire facility to ensuring all documentation is current and filled out properly. It's a typical military white-glove inspection.

"But something that really helps a MAF stand out from another is the personal touches that people put into their facilities to make them a home away from home," he explained.

Oscar-01 has a heritage theme with pictures of B-24 Liberators throughout the hallways and living areas.

The Airmen at Oscar-01 have also done a few things to add a personal touch to their facility: painting murals around the building, repainting and adding crown molding in the dayroom, bedrooms and other living areas and adding a model of a B-24 Liberator that is displayed in the dining area.

Staff Sgt. John Hamilton, facility manager, painted the murals and built the model. "I am also working on another B-24 model to put above our pool table that will have lights in the bomb-bay doors, and I'm going to add a few more murals around the building before everything is finished," he said.

It's these details which helped Oscar-01 stand out, but what it really came down to this year was the chef, said Sergeant Offermann.

The chef who was on duty the day of the inspection was Airman 1st Class Chelsea Oestreicher. "She made a huge impression on the inspectors and had our kitchen spotless," he said. "All of the other areas were pretty equal between the MAFs, but she really helped us stand out."

Not only does the award say that Oscar-01 is the best MAF at Warren, it also gives the Airmen bragging rights for the year.

"It's all in fun," said Senior Airman Fredrick Stewart, senior chef. "It's a healthy competition that breeds a good form of motivation between the missile squadrons and MAFs."

Along with the award, the MAF crew received $1,000 to help with site enhancement. With the $500 they won for the third quarter, they hope to finish off the rest of their projects.

"We hope to use the $1,500 we won to finish off our ongoing projects so that we have a chance to win Air Force Space Command's facility excellence award," said Master Sgt. Shari Schad, 321st MS.
