Women from four branches of the armed services participated in the 47th Annual Women's Military Dependents Golf Championship held May 20 to 22 at Warren's golf course.

The overall medalist of the championship event was Cheryl Wieland of Sheridan, Wyo. Overall runners-up were Joan Waldrop of Elizabethtown, Ky., followed by Madeline Cook of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Forty-three participants took part in the annual event, which is held at one military installation around the country every year. Participants must be female military family members, amateur golfers and be at least 18 years old. Spouses of active duty, retired and Reserve from all five U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to participate.

The tournament originated in 1962 under the leadership of Zada Schriever at Andrews Air Force Base, Md. It was a 36-hole event and attracted 146 golfers. It has grown to a 54-hole event and hosting the tournament has rotated between the five services. Next year's tournament, the 48th tournament, will be held at Fort Knox, Ky. The 50th tournament will be held at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., where the tournament was founded.

"Everybody has been absolutely wonderful," said Jo Burger, a 25-year participant and director of the tournament. "Team Warren has welcomed us with open arms; we haven't had to request a thing. The tournament has been a great way for the players to have fun and renew old friendships."

The golf tournament awards banquet took place May 22 at the Trail's End Club.

"We've been planning this event for 18 months," said Carroll Sharratt, Warren Golf Club. "Many people worked very hard to make this event so successful to include the course employees, the participants and senior leaders."
