Fitness center, outdoor recreation earn 4 stars Published Sept. 19, 2008 By Tech. Sgt. Kurt Arkenberg 90th Missile Wing Public Affairs F.E. WARREN AFB, Wyo. -- Members of outdoor recreation and the base gym earned a "Four-Star" rating as part of the Air Force Outdoor Recreation 5-Star Recognition Program. The program, an annual recognition program used to highlight superior achievement for those outdoor recreation programs that have demonstrated excellence in the areas of operations, programs, training, facilities, and customer service. "The 'five-star' program is a comprehensive checklist derived from [Air Force Instruction] 34-266, Golden Eagle Standards," said Staff Sgt. Daniel Penland, Warren athletic director. "When you score 90 percent or higher in each area inspected, you receive a star." Warren received stars in operations, programs, facilities and customer service. The base was only denied its first five-star rating since 2005 due to minor training deficiencies. "Our training score didn't reach the 90 percent needed for a fifth star but not due to anything other than funds," said Karl Pfoor, Warren Outdoor Recreation director. "All of our guys get training throughout the year but sometimes our budget doesn't allow training in everything we want." According to Mr. Pfoor, the inspection thoroughly covered every step in the process of ODR programs and can take a full day or more. "I was ready to go when (the inspector) got here," said Mr. Pfoor. "But it was a long day of going through every step of every program we have, and meeting with all of the employees involved with those programs. "Basically, I pulled out my binders, (the inspector) pulled out the checklists, and we went over everything step by step from about 8 a.m. to after 4 (p.m.)." Warren, along with all four and five-star bases will be recognized at the National Recreation and Park Association Annual Congress or the International Conference on Outdoor Recreation and Education held in October or early November.
