The base veterinary clinic will change its hours, effective May 2.

The new hours of operation will be Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. The office will be closed every Friday and on all federal holidays. As always, hours of operation are subject to change due to mission requirements and military obligations, but every effort will be made to minimize the impact to patients.

Active-duty service members and retirees registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System who have medical privileges at base military medical facilities are authorized to have their pets treated at Army veterinary treatment facilities. National Guard and Reservists who are on active-duty orders for more than 30 days are also authorized services; however, a valid military ID and a copy of activation orders must be provided.

Services provided to dogs and cats include vaccinations, heartworm and parasite tests, microchip implantation, health certificates, minor sick calls, and heartworm, flea and tick preventives. Unfortunately, the facility is not staffed to provide surgical, dental or emergency services to pets. It is the goal of the clinic to provide efficient, effective and appropriate preventive medicine services at a lower cost than those available in the local community.

In order to dispense any prescription medications, the animal must be a current patient. This requires that pets have been seen within the last 12 months at an Army veterinary treatment facility. Also, the current base regulation requires all dogs, cats and horses residing on base be registered with the veterinary clinic within seven days. If service members live on base, the members' pets must be vaccinated annually; if the pet has been treated by an off-base veterinarian, proof of vaccines must be provided to the base vet clinic. If the service member lives off base, pets must be vaccinated in accordance with local policy.

The base clinic is located in Bldg. 288 on the corner of Frontier and 5th Cavalry Avenue, sharing a parking lot with the Independence Gym. All pets are seen by appointment only, and appointments will be available Tuesday through Thursday. For more information call 773-3354.
