Members of the 90th Logistics Readiness Squadron gathered together in the early morning hours in Bldg. 1270 and marched out into the sunrise Sept. 9.

Airmen and civilian workers marched in two flights to Gates 1 and 2, while a vehicle convoy traveled to Gate 5 to greet members of the 90th Security Forces Group as part of a ruck march to honor first responders everywhere and those who have served and are currently serving since Sept. 11, 2001.

"The Inspiration behind this event was the 10-year anniversary of the events of Sept. 11th," said Master Sgt. Troy Johnson, 90th LRS. "It provided us an opportunity to reflect on the personal cost those events brought on so many."

The three vehicles and 45 Airmen and civilians departed Bldg. 1270 at 6 a.m. to pay visits to guards posted at Gates 1, 2 and 5 while also stopping to visit members of Warren's fire department.

"We also want to recognize our own first responders here protect the base populous every day," Johnson said.

"The significance of Sept. 11 along with the sacrifices made that day and every day in the 10 years since drove the deployment and distribution flight to pay tribute to first responders for what they do every day," said Susan Barto, 90th LRS.

Some Airmen marching recently returned from deployment. For them, the ruck march was a way to honor those they served with who are still away from home.

"There is only one way to describe being able to participate in this," added Senior Airman Kaylon Haynes, 90th LRS, who had just returned from deployment. "Bottom line - prideful."

After both flights and all vehicles had returned, members of the 90th Mission Support Group and 90th LRS gathered for breakfast to share with each other what the event meant to them, and to remember the sacrifices of others.

"It would not have been possible to hold this event without the outstanding support of individuals assigned to the 90th LRS, deployment and distribution flight," said Johnson. "These individuals ensured we had enough sand bags, built the ruck sacks, made the trip downtown to pick up the food and then were out there "rucking" to the three base entry gates and the fire department.

"The most important thing is remembering - not just the event but what has happened since," said Col. Timothy Dodge, 90th MSG commander. "As I walked, I said a prayer for Senior Airman Dan Johnson, a great Airman I worked with who lost his life in Afghanistan. This event was for him and every Airman, Soldier, Sailor and Marine who serves this country."
