Use of Wyoming state land Published March 23, 2012 By Capt. Ryan Richter 90th Missile Wing Judge Advocate F. E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. -- One of the benefits of living in Wyoming is the ability to use its vast state land for recreational purposes. There are nearly 3.5 million acres of state land to use for activities such as hiking, boating, hunting and fishing. With this privilege however, comes a responsibility to use state land appropriately. If planning to engage in recreational activities on state land, there are a few things to keep in mind: · The land one intends to use must be legally accessible. This means one must be able to access the land via public road, right-of-way, easement, public waters, or adjacent state, local or federal land. One cannot cross private land to reach state land unless the permission of the private landowner is obtained. Do not assume one has permission; ask. · Cultivated cropland is not open to public use, even if it is technically state land. Be on the lookout for postings related to closures or restrictions. If not sure whether a specific piece of land is open to public use, do not use it. · Off-road vehicle use is prohibited on state land. If driving a motor vehicle, it must remain on established roads. New roads or tracks cannot be created to park a vehicle. · Overnight camping is prohibited on state land except where specifically designated. Open fires and charcoal grills are also prohibited. · Avoid any activity that damages state land. This includes leaving behind any trash or personal property when departing. If one desires to use state land outside the scope of activities permitted by law, contact the Office of State Lands & Investments about the possibility of obtaining a special permit or lease. Above all, remember that using state land is a privilege and that all are responsible for making sure future generations enjoy this same privilege.
