Warren's fire department held its annual Fire Prevention Week open house Oct. 13.

"It's to make people aware of fire prevention and safety," said Staff Sgt. Robert Rivera, 90th Civil Engineer Squadron fire prevention. "It's also just something fun for the kids and adults to do."

"Because of things such as Fire Prevention Week and higher safety standards on base, there are fewer fires on base than in the off-base neighborhoods," said Airman 1st Class Louis Perna, 90th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter.

One benefit of interacting with children in the community is that familiarizing children with firefighters will help alleviate childrens' fear of them during emergency situations.

"Sometimes kids are afraid of the firefighter outfit," Perna said. "It's big, you wear a mask, your voice is distorted. Sometimes they don't know there's a person behind the mask."

Visitors were treated to lunch, various games and activities, fire prevention displays and an educational puppet show explaining several fire safety topics to the children in attendance.

Partnering with the fire department, Balfour Beatty Communities helped coordinate the event and provided 250 pumpkins for visitors to take for the upcoming fall holidays.

"We partnered with the fire department because we wanted to support fire prevention month," said Rebeccah McClure, Balfour Beatty Communities Lifeworks coordinator.
