Educators from the local school district toured the base April 19 to get a better understanding of the life and culture of the military dependents they teach.

Eight teachers and administrators from McCormick Junior High School and Freedom Elementary School learned about the base’s mission and met with Mighty Ninety Airmen.

“The purpose of the tour is to build relationships with the educators and give them an idea of what life is like on base,” said Nancy Warner, 90th Force Support Squadron school liaison and organizer of the tour.

In addition to a windshield tour of the base, the participants visited the Airman Family Readiness Center, the Youth Center and the U-01 training facility.

Col. Stephen Kravitsky, 90th Missile Wing commander, welcomed the group at the AFRC and gave them a thorough overview of the mission of the wing.

Kravitsky stressed the fact that students from military families might have stressors other students may not, which include frequent school transfers as a result of changing duty stations and absent parents due to overseas deployments, missile complex deployments, long shifts and training exercises.

“I thought it was very educational, interesting, and informative,” said Jeff Conine, McCormick Junior High principal. “It gives us a lot of insight into what their daily life is like.”

Kravitsky hopes familiarizing local educators with the base will give them better insight and understanding on how to best accommodate military students, he said.

He thanked the educators for the service local schools provide for the families of Warren as an integral function of the wing.

“That was a really nice statement,” Conine said. “I’ve always considered Cheyenne and the base to be conjoined and partnered. Bringing the school district into partnership with the base really makes it personal.”
