With great pets comes great responsibility

Owning a pet goes hand-in-hand with greater responsibility when living in a military community. There are specific rules that must be abided by while living or visiting a military installation with pets.

Over the past few months, there have been an increase in the amount of pet control incidents or infractions on F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo.

Sadly, most owners don't even think about the consequences of what their pet could do to another human being or animal. It's time to re-educate and remind pet owners and innocent bystanders of the "rules of engagement" so we can keep our community safe.

Owning a pet on F.E. Warren requires diligence. Owners must keep their pet under control and reasonably quiet at all times. Owners must provide adequate care, such as food, water and shelter, especially on extremely hot or cold days. Pets must be on a leash at all times when not in your home or fenced in area.

There are three areas on F.E. Warren where your pet can run free, but you must be with your pet, and they will not be a nuisance or danger to others or animals in the area.

-Area 1: Immediately around and west of North and South Pearson Lakes. The area is bordered on the east by Rogers Road, on the north by Central Drive, on the west by Central Drive and Wapiti Drive, and on the south by Wapiti and Rogers Road.

-Area 2: Directly east of the base stables. The area is bordered on the West by Rogers Road, on the north by the base perimeter fence, on the east by the base perimeter fence, and on the south by Sampson Road.

-Area 3: Located south and west of Gate 2. This area is bordered on the northeast by Missile Drive, on the northwest by Blackpowder Road, on the northwest by a line drawn from the intersection of Blackpowder Road and Territory Road in a southeasterly direction to the base perimeter fence, and on the southeast by the base perimeter fence.

For Areas 2 and 3, you do not have to pick up the feces.

Pets' owners are responsible for proper feces disposal and are also liable for any damage caused by the pets, including injuries to people or animals.

Also, all pets on base will be registered with the Veterinary Clinic within seven days after arrival on base to ensure the pet is healthy and has proper immunizations. If a pet bites/scratches someone, the veterinarian will order it into quarantine for a 10-day period for evaluation.

All pets on base will be vaccinated and have proof. All found stray animals are transported to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter. Owners may be financially responsible for expenses incurred if their animal is picked up as a stray or causes harm to others.

Pet ownership is a big responsibility; please abide by the rules when on F.E. Warren, and help us keep our community safe and healthy.
