WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. -- Touring the base by trolley, one dozen elected officials, representatives and spouses saw base life first-hand. The Wyoming Association of Municipalities visited here June 11, 2015, establishing a connection with the base's history and mission. "It's a major part of the community. The base and Cheyenne formed within weeks of each other, so it's important to understand the base," said Clint Bassett, Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities. The tour participants got a first-hand look at the missile procedures trainer, a simulator used to train missile crews on missile operations. Missile combat crews demonstrated a missile launch scenario, providing an example of the skill and professionalism that characterizes the men and women who perform the ICBM mission daily. Lara Deist, a visitor on the tour, said it was a real eye-opener. Her grandson is going to be a remotely piloted aircraft operator, she was glad to learn of the wide range of available facilities and services on base. Additionally, the group visited the base museum and were given a windshield tour of the base which included the Argonne Parade Field, base movie theater and medical treatment facility. At the base museum visitors were treated to a thorough history of the base, from its beginnings as Fort D.A. Russell, to its mission during World War II and the Cold War era. Community members interested in learning more about the base should attend the base open-house, known as Fort D.A. Russell days, from July 17 through 19.
