Symposium to build better space officers

F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo. --  The second annual Air Force Space Command Space Professional Development Symposium takes place here May 23-24. 

The event for the command's company grade officers and target officers of all ranks includes informational briefings on the command's wide array of missions and roles. 

Briefing topics will include manned space, missile defense, foreign space capabilities, personnel issues, future space capabilities, space aggressors, Reserve issues, ICBM transformation and U.S. Strategic Command's theater space roles. Also, an expert panel will discuss space policy and doctrine. 

First Lt. Peter Hefley, 90th Operations Support Squadron, said the symposium's focus is to educate Space Command officers on the command's role and its future direction. 

This symposium came about from the U.S. Space Commission report in 2001 that stated the U.S. military was not on track to meet the nation's needs in the space arena and the Defense Department must develop stronger space leaders through career development education. The Air Force established a space cadre to meet the nation's needs, which led to the Space Professional Development Symposium. The previous year's symposium here included more than 110 officers from eight AFSPC bases.
