A facilities excellence team visited one of Warren's missile alert facilities May 21 through May 23.

The excellence team, consisting of active duty as well as civilian military members, evaluated Warren's nominee, Bravo-01 site, during their annual inspection of one MAF in each of the three missile bases in Air Force Space Command.

"It's a competition between the missile bases," said 2nd Lt. Jonathan Needham, 90th Civil Engineering Squadron. "A team comes out and inspects the quality of life and the condition of the facility. The base with the best overall MAF wins the prize."

$25,000 is awarded to the MAF with the best overall site. The sites are inspected and graded on a number of quality-of-life aspects at the MAF.

"We mainly look at the maintenance of the facility, the interior and exterior of the building and the entire physical environment," said Paul Womble, AFSPC and a member of the facilities excellence team.

There are 10 areas that are evaluated on a scale of one through 10, 10 being the best in that respective area, and those scores are run though multipliers before the final score is revealed. Specific areas that are inspected are future site plans, landscaping, pavement conditions on the MAF grounds and the fencing all around.

Because of the importance of the mission the MAFs serve, it's important for the quality of life at the facilities to be top notch.

"[This competition] helps instill pride and ownership with the troops and helps ensure [the military] is spending government funds wisely to maintain the facilities," Mr. Womble said. "It also shows a competitive spirit as well."

Competitive indeed for the missile bases. Two years ago, Warren was the winner of the facilities excellence title and hopes to win again.
