Many AAFES stores around the country are starting to distribute the new Air Force Airman battle uniform. The rush to purchase the uniform has resulted in many stores running out of stock.

Since this is one of the first orders of the new uniform to be made, many have shading and fabric failures that make them unable to be shipped, said Jessica Zangara, senior sales associate of the Warren Military Clothing Sales Store.

The store has the ABUs on back order with an undetermined arrival date.

They also have the green suede boots for sale, but supplies are limited. Airmen who want to get on a waiting list for the uniforms or boots can order them now at the store.

"As soon as we get them, we can start giving them to the people who are on the list," Ms. Zangara said.

The uniform shortage seems to be Air Force- wide.

"Everyone thinks it's just us because we're in Wyoming, but it's really not," Ms. Zangara said.

Military members are reminded about the dangers of buying the uniform from Internet companies. Many sites sell a form of the ABU that may be inferior to U.S. military standards.

"Many of these Web sites are advertising their uniforms as 'official' and 'fully certified,' however no commercial vendors currently have Air Force certification," said Maj. Randall Smith of the Air Force Uniform and Recognition Branch.

All uniforms should be purchased through the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia or AAFES when they become available, Major Smith said.

"We wish there was more we could do about it," Ms. Zangara said. "But at this time, our hands are tied behind our backs."
