The 321st Missile Squadron and the Green Tails Booster Club hosted 65 distinguished visitors at the squadron's annual open house Oct. 27. The open house allowed families, friends, and community partners to spend a day "on-alert" in the missile field to experience the nuclear mission.

"The open house events were organized around a normal four-day missile field deployment," said Lt. Col. LeAnne Moore, 321st MS commander. "The day was a huge success!"

Squadron representatives explained the 90th Space Wing's mission and how missileers, facility managers, missile chefs, security forces and helicopters accomplish that mission every day.

Flight Engineers from the 37th Helicopter Squadron demonstrated search and rescue techniques and how they use infrared cameras to fly security missions at night. Young visitors were able to sit in the cockpits, use the aircraft controls and simulate flying.

The visitors deployed to the Lima-01 missile alert facility in Northern Colorado where they went below ground into the launch control center. The on-alert missile crew gave a capsule orientation, described how they would launch missiles if directed and gave the group insight into the life of a missileer. The facility manager and site chef also demonstrated to visitors how they contribute to the mission.

The 790th Missile Security Forces Squadron mobile fire team enthralled visitors with a gun drill, and the 90th MSFS Security Response Team deputized younger visitors as "junior response force members." The MFT and SRT combined forces to conduct an intruder "take down" demonstration.

"Their display of communication, tactics and firepower proved to all present exactly why not to challenge the 90th SW security forces," Colonel Moore said.

Colonel Moore said this year's event was even bigger than last year, and the open house gave families an up-close look at how missile crews, security forces, facility managers, chefs, helicopters and maintenance work as a team to accomplish the 90th SW mission.
