Base tax center to open for appointments Published Jan. 18, 2008 By Basil Heise Warren Tax Center F. E. WARREN AFB, Wyo. -- The base tax center is slated to open Feb. 4. and will begin scheduling appointments Jan. 29. The office will be open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The office is located in Bldg. 1200, room 119. There is no cost to active-duty military, retirees, dependents and DoD civilians. The staff will prepare most returns by appointment, with appointments scheduled on a first-come first-serve basis. As in the past, 1040EZ filers have the option to have their taxes prepared on a walk-in basis. People eligible to file using the 1040EZ must have a filing status of either Single or Married Filing Jointly, with no dependents. Also, 1040EZ filers must only have income from the following sources: one or more jobs, interest from banks and/or credit unions, or unemployment compensation. If there is anything else to report on the tax return, Airmen do not qualify to file using the 1040EZ form and must make an appointment. Scheduled appointments will be processed before walk-ins, so there may be a wait. Although the section tries to provide service to everyone, they do have some limitations. They cannot prepare overly complicated returns, such as those involving farm income or speculation in the stock market. There have been some late tax law changes involving the alternative minimum tax "patch." The AMT changes mean that filers using one of the five forms that are affected: Form 8863, Education Credits; Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits; Schedule 2 (Form 1040A), Child & Dependent Care Expenses for Form 1040A; or Form 8396, Mortgage Interest Credit, will need to wait until after Feb. 11 in order to file. The tax office is still looking for volunteers to help prepare returns for this tax season. If interested, e-mail the tax center at 90swjataxcenter@warren.af.mil. Training for volunteers is scheduled for the last week of January. Training for returning volunteers will be held Jan. 28 through 29, and training for new volunteers will be held Jan. 30 through Feb.1. For more information call 773-5829.
