Warren supports Military Saves Week Published March 3, 2008 By Staff Reports F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. -- The Defense Department has designated Feb. 24 through March 2 as Military Saves Week to encourage service members and their families to establish savings goals and set aside money for emergencies and other needs. Airmen can support this effort by taking the saver pledge at https://www.military.saves.org. This is a sustained effort to create a culture that encourages Airmen to save and build wealth and avoid debt. "As much as we don't want to admit it, money is a significant part of our lives, and is often a major concern for many people," said Col. Mike Morgan, 90th Space Wing commander. "Financial troubles can cause Airmen to turn to alcohol, drugs and other high-risk activities." Colonel Morgan will begin a week of events focusing on saving money with the showing of the movie "In Debt We Trust" Monday at 2 p.m. in the base theater. Active-duty members, civilian employees and family members are highly encouraged to attend. Throughout the week, the Airman and Family Readiness Center will conduct lunchtime seminars. Free lunches will be provided. "Financial readiness and military readiness are inextricably linked," Colonel Morgan said. "If you are not confident in your financial situation, you cannot give your best to the Air Force." Military Saves is part of a nationwide campaign, America Saves. This program is sponsored by Consumer Federation of America, the Department of Defense, the National Association of Securities Dealers Investor Education Foundation, and several defense credit unions and military banks. Military Saves is also part of the DoD financial readiness campaign, encouraging leaders to support their troops attempting to get out of debt and save money.
