The 90th Civil Engineering Squadron Readiness Flight earned a Col. Frederick J. Reimer Award as the best readiness flight in the Air Force for 2007.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Webb, 90th CES commander, was presented the award during a ceremony Feb. 22 in Washington, D.C.

This isn't the first Air Force-level award the civil engineer squadron has received. It also was the best small fire department in the Air Force in 2006, but that doesn't mean this award isn't special, Colonel Webb said.

"There is a special meaning that we won the best readiness flight in the Air Force because we are at war, and it shows our commitment and that we are truly prepared to support the Global War on Terrorism," he said.

The readiness flight has two roles. It provides the civil engineer squadron training to respond to emergencies and deployments and serves the wing emergency management function, keeping the wing trained and ready to respond to incidents.

The civil engineer squadron is divided into 13 core Air Force specialties, and what the readiness flight does is set up job-specific tasks during training so people get to practice what they would do in a deployed environment, said Tech. Sgt. Michael English, 90th CES.

The training the readiness flight provided the 90th Space Wing in preparation for the operational readiness and the nuclear surety inspections in 2007 were highlights that won this award. But it was the flights hard work in transferring over to the new Air Force Incident Management System and getting everyone trained that helped the unit stand out, Sergeant English said.

"We were the first in Air Force Space Command to transfer over to the new system," Colonel Webb said. "And not only did we transfer over to the new system, but we also trained and proved that the wing was prepared to implement the system."
