Warren Golf Club: Open ‘fore’ business Published May 15, 2008 By Staff Sgt. Chad Thompson 90th Space Wing Public Affairs F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo. -- A child stands on a lush, green fairway with a determined look on his face. A red flag flaps in the wind about 85 yards away. The only sounds heard are birds chirping and trees crackling. The boy hits a small white ball, and exhales in jubilation as it lands softly on the green about six feet from the hole. He putts it in and completes his best round of the year. After finishing the round, the boy stops by the clubhouse and thanks the golf pro for the advice he gave him on the driving range earlier. The Warren Golf Club offers lessons for adults in May, and children lessons begin in June, said Carroll Sharratt, 90th Force Support Squadron and the golf pro here. Along with lessons, the course has a driving range, two practice putting greens and a 155-yard practice hole with a practice bunker. "The Warren Golf Club has one of the best practice facilities in the city," said Charles Norwood, Warren Golf Club pro shop manager. The course offers golfers 6,729 total yards from the blue tees, Mr. Sharratt said. "It's a good course for beginners because it is so open. "A beginner can come out, and enjoy a round without having to worry about losing a lot of golf balls and still get a challenge," he explained. The course staff offers daily green fees based on rank, and annual passes are available now that are good to March 31. The pay structure is affordable, and a yearly pass is equal to about 23 rounds of golf, so if someone plays more than 23 rounds a year, the pass pays for itself, Mr. Sharratt said. "This year, the course is about 10 times better than it was last year," he said. "Last year we had about seven greens that didn't make it through winter and it took months to recuperate." Mr. Sharratt said the course is 100 percent ready, and it is due to the covers they got last year to protect the greens during the winter. The course staff is also making some upgrades to the course sprinkler system by installing a new above ground computer irrigation system and about 800 new sprinkler heads. "The computerized system will help save money, water and man hours," Mr. Sharratt said. "The new sprinklers are also designed to be more wind tolerant and will effectively water the greens and fairways better." Not only is the course in great shape but the clubhouse grill is now open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch Monday through Friday, he said. The pro shop offers Mother's Day, Father's Day and other holiday sales, he continued. The course clubhouse is open Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information or to make a tee time, call 773-3556.
