A member of the Warren community recently earned the 2008 Joan Orr Spouse of the Year Award for the Air National Guard.

Sharon Hopkins, wife of Lt. Col. Steven Hopkins, prior commander of the 30th Airlift Squadron, earned the award by her selfless efforts and contributions to the local Air Force community here.

Colonel Hopkins is currently with the 618th Tanker Airlift Control Center at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

Mrs. Hopkins said she was surprised when she found out she had won the award, but says she feels awkward to be highlighted.

"I know many spouses in the military community here who do great things," Mrs. Hopkins said.

The Joan Orr Award recognizes spouses of service members for their contributions to the Air Force. Spouses are selected from each Air Force command, to include the ANG, and those winners will compete for the Air Force level title.

The award honors the late Joan Orr, wife of former Secretary of the Air Force Verne Orr, who displayed outstanding service to the Air Force.

Mrs. Hopkins has positively contributed to the local community by aiding deployed member's family during her husband's command of the 30th AS, staying active in the Warren Spouse's Club, effectively volunteering at and assisting Freedom Elementary School, and is a co-leader of Brownie Girl Scout Troop 257.

"I enjoy doing everything I do," said Mrs. Hopkins. "That's why I do it."

Last year, Mrs. Hopkins also introduced Freedom Elementary School to the program "Month of the Military Child," which takes place in April.

The program provides arts and crafts and scrapbooking activities for children. This was the second year Freedom Elementary School has participated.

The Air Force Joan Orr Spouse of the Year Award will be announced at a later date and time.
