The Nuclear Weapons Council recently visited Warren as part of a familiarization tour.

The NWC is a joint DoD organization established by Congress as a means to ensure cooperation and coordination occurs between Defense Department agencies who work in the nuclear enterprise.

The team was not an evaluation team, said Lt. Col. David Martinson, wing safety. Rather, the NWC provides policy recommendations to senior leadership.

To make sound decisions, he continued, they have to be familiar with all the aspects of a certain unit's dealings with the nuclear arena.

"The council was very impressed with F.E. Warren," said Colonel Mike Morgan, 90th Missile Wing commander. "Our very young Airmen here are doing remarkable things."

Colonel Martinson also said Warren Airmen demonstrated various operations for the council: the many functions of a launch facility, helicopter tours, missile alert procedures and responses from the tactical side of security forces.

The visit held much importance, Colonel Morgan said. All 66 of the council members witnessed the different demonstrations by Warren Airmen. Of the 66, 28 members were general officers or their civilian equivalent.

"The visit was a great opportunity to see the mission and people of Warren," said Colonel Craig Campbell, who works with the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Chemical and Biological Defense Programs.

"The enthusiasm was evident. The understanding of the importance of the mission was evident.

"Both factors were impressed heavily upon the council," he said.

Colonel Martinson said the preparation for the visit was like any other day at Warren.

"We constantly represent to the entire Twentieth Air Force, and the Air Force as a whole, how serious we take our nuclear business," he said. "We at Warren are always professional and capable in the way in which we execute our mission."
