Come and feel the wind beneath your sails and the water beneath your oars.

Come and take your place as the rightful captain of your own ship.

An opportunity to cast your anchor happens during the Warren Communibrary and the
Aquatic Center's second annual Build-a-Boat Competition tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Aquatic Center's pool.

The constraints of the Build-a-Boat Competition tests the ingenuity and imagination of its teams constructing a boat from cardboard within an hour and sailing the boat the furthest distance across the pool without sinking.

Awards go out to respective teams for "Fastest Sailing," "Creative Design" and "Most Team Spirit."

"I would highly recommend this event to families, office groups, or any group of folks interested in team-building skills, improved communications, and having fun," said Robin Lauser, 90th Force Support squadron.

This is an Air Force "signature program" for the community center, meaning there is an expectation that it happens annually. A minimal fee is charged to cover costs, but this does not generate income for the Communibrary, she said.

"We push this event because we believe that it embodies the very essence of what a community center does...it builds and nurtures both the sense of family and the sense of community," Mrs. Lauser said.

Active duty, Guard, families, and civilians alike will find this event a great way of having fun and creating some lasting memories, she said.

The entry cost is $3 per person with a minimum of five members to a team and a maximum team size of ten. The fees include all materials to construct the boat, labor costs for lifeguards and employees, and trophies.

Last year, the competition had five teams accounting for nearly 30 participants and an additional 25-30 co-workers, spouses, and family members to help cheer on the teams, she said. It was definitely a representative mix of ages and interests from retirees to 7 year olds.

If someone misses the sign up date, Mrs. Lauser said, please feel free to stop by and cheer on the teams.
