Warren fire emergency services will be conducting a variety of events throughout the week to spread the message, "Prevent Home Fires," this year's theme for Fire Prevention Week.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the 1871 Great Chicago Fire that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.

The fire began Oct. 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on Oct. 9, 1871.

In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which Oct. 9 falls.

Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record.

Warren's Fire Prevention Week will kick Saturday off with a fire department open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bldg. 324., and the activities during the week will include vehicle displays, booths at the BX, visits to the child development center, youth center and Freedom Elementary School.

Activities include puppet shows, fire extinguisher training, smoke house maze, fire truck
tours from area departments and a large air trampoline. Hot dogs, chips, drinks and snacks will be served.

With more than $500 indoors from local restaurants, merchants and activities, people won't want to miss this event.
