Base officials recommend entering gates with caution Published March 19, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Chad Thompson 90th Missile Wing Public Affairs F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. -- During the Warren's main gate construction, Gate 2 at Missile Drive and Gate 5 at Central Avenue will open to offset the more than 1,100 vehicles that go through Gate 1 from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Traffic at Gate 2 and Gate 5 will increase drastically during this construction, and everyone should find the right time for them, said Julie Whalen, 90th Civil Engineer Squadron. Human behavior will drive people to find the path of least resistance. It may take a while to find the route and time that works best for them, but base officials are working on possibly staggering the work hours, she added. Another issue discussed was taking the correct route for those leaving base. Mrs. Whalen emphasized that Wyoming Department of Transportation construction on Missile Drive near the I-25 underpass will be shutting down all entrances heading north on the interstate for a short period of time. Weather permitting, the entrances should open in late March. "Anyone living on the north side of town should use Gate 5 [at Central Avenue] and anyone living on the south side of town should use Gate 2 [at Missile Drive] when entering or leaving base," Mrs. Whalen said. "Warren's Airmen and their families' safety is always a concern, and base officials are doing everything they can to limit safety issues during the main gate construction," said Col. Mike Morgan, 90th Missile Wing commander. "Everyone should get familiar with the intersection on Central Avenue when leaving the base," Mrs. Whalen said. "Those leaving base must realize the Wyoming Department of Transportation drivers turning left on that intersection have the right-of-way." Pay close attention to location and speed limits is equally important, Mrs. Whalen said. With Gate 1 closing, there will be a lot more traffic in different parts of the base, but she emphasized everyone needs to pay attention the their speeds when traveling through housing areas. The speed limit through base housing is 15 miles per hour. "With a little patience and understanding we should be able to get through this construction without any accidents," Mrs. Whalen said.
