A reminder from the commander: Practice safe winter driving Published Feb. 9, 2011 By Col. Greg Tims 90th Missile Wing commander F. E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. -- With the recent weather affecting driving conditions, I want to remind everyone to use good judgment and slow down. The Air Force has lost three members due to mishaps during winter driving so far this year. Recently, another unit had a vehicle overheat in the missile field, while the cause is still under investigation, I thought it best to remind everyone of some safe driving tips during winter weather. Whether you are going out to the missile field or driving off duty, make sure you stay on roads you know are passable. If you do get caught in a snow drift: 1. Clear as much snow as possible away from the grill to avoid overheating the engine. 2. Ensure the exhaust pipe stays clear of snow. 3. Don't leave the vehicle unless help is visible and within 100 yards. 4. Make the vehicle visible to rescuers either by turning hazard lights or inside dome light on (just be sure not to run down the battery). Three additional reminders: Government owned vehicles must obey the speed limits specific to their vehicle type -- ex. max speed for HMMWVs and TEs is 55 mph and the speed limit for all GOVs is 25mph on gravel. If roads are in yellow, speeds must be reduced by at least 10 mph, and of course my permission is required to drive on roads in red. Lastly the 90th Missile Wing Safety Office provides superb skid car and gravel road training; schedule your appointment today.
