An environmental assessment team visited three Wyoming locations last week to address potential environmental effects associated with the proposed silo elimination activities at F. E. Warren.

Public scoping meetings were held in Cheyenne, Torrington and Chugwater, Wyo. The meetings' focus was to explain the proposed plan for the elimination or dismantlement of 50 Peacekeeper launch facilities and five Missile Alert Facilities within the deactivated 400th Missile Squadron located throughout Wyoming. If silo elimination is selected as the means to meet the launcher reduction, then that will comply with the New Strategic Arms Treaty which was ratified and entered into force Feb. 5, 2011.

"I felt like the people who attended really appreciated the opportunity to have an active role in this process," said Rex Ellis, 90th Missile Wing Treaty Compliance officer.

The meetings provided an opportunity for the public to comment and ask questions regarding the silo elimination effort.

"The turnout was really good for all the meetings; a lot of helpful feedback was presented from the residents," said Chris Powers, project manager for AECOM Technology Corporation.

Following evaluation of the public's comments, the Air Force will prepare the analysis and publish the draft environmental assessment in support of the elimination of the Peacekeeper silos. The draft environmental assessment is anticipated to be released in March and will be placed for review in the Goshen, Platte and Laramie County Public libraries.

In addition to elimination efforts at F. E. Warren AFB; Malmstrom AFB, Mont., and Vandenberg AFB, Calif., will have elimination and dismantlement activities as well. The decision of the elimination process throughout the military, and compliance of said process, must be completed by Feb. 4, 2018.
