The 90th Force Support Squadron sustainment services flight is scheduled to host a half-marathon, and several other races, on the streets of F. E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., Aug. 24 for Airmen and their family members.

The Striker Life Half-Marathon will include a half-marathon, half-marathon relay, 5K and 10K race, said Senior Airman Michelle Abercrombie, 90th FSS assistant sports director.

Half-marathon relay runners will run in teams of four and pass a baton after completing legs of the race, she clarified.

Abercrombie explained the reason for including shorter races in the event.

"It's for people who haven't been training for a half-marathon," she said.

A good reason to enter one of the races is completing a long-distance footrace provides a great sense of accomplishment, Abercrombie added.

The first 200 registrants will receive a free moisture-wicking Striker Life shirt.

Entering a long-distance race requires some preparation beforehand, said 1st Lt. Beth Shuler, 90th FSS/SSF commander.

Shuler, a triathlete, is no stranger to running competitively. She offered suggestions on ways to get in shape and stay healthy while training for the half-marathon and other races.

One suggestion she gave was to lift weights to strengthen the lower-body muscles, which support running and proper form. Improper form and underdeveloped muscles can lead to injuries like shin splints or torn ligaments, she warned.

The upper-body and core muscles should not be neglected either. Many runners are not aware of the importance of a strong upper-body and arm swing, Shuler explained.

"If you swing your arms, your legs will follow," she said.

Shuler also warned against trying to increase the distance one can run too quickly, as it can lead to injury.

Another pitfall runners fall into is an inadequate diet, she said.

"A lot of times when people get really into running, they restrict their diet too much," Shuler said. "This reduces their performance."

Remaining hydrated is very important before and during strenuous exercise. Refreshments will be provided at checkpoints throughout the race, she added.

Registration for the races ends Aug. 21, and no late entrants will be allowed. Register at the Freedom Hall Fitness Center. Forms are available online at www.funatwarren.com, and registration is free. For more information, call 307-773-6175.
