To commemorate the start of the 2012 Combined Federal Campaign at F. E. Warren, the Company Grade Officers Council sponsored a CFC kickoff 5K run and 1.5-mile walk along the streets of Warren organized by the 90th Missile Wing Staff Agencies Sept. 28.

"The event is to let everyone know the CFC has started," said 1st Lt. Jessica Whitney, 90th Comptroller Squadron Financial Services Flight commander and CFC kickoff project officer.

The CFC, the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, is an opportunity to give back to the community, Whitney said.

"Normally, charitable organizations aren't allowed to ask the military for donations," she explained. "The CFC is the one time of the year they can solicit from the Department of Defense."

Event organizers and volunteers made breakfast for participants to enjoy after they ran or walked. During the breakfast, participants were able to sign up to contribute to charities of their choice, Whitney said.

Squadron CFC representatives will have information for how members of their units can contribute, Whitney said.

Approximately forty runners and walkers showed up to the kickoff event.

"I came out to run this 5K to support the CFC," said Senior Airman Nick Heasley, 790th Missile Security Forces Squadron. "It's good to support the local fundraisers and all the other fundraisers we donate to."

"I'm glad so many people came out," Whitney said. "I want to thank everyone in advance for participating in the CFC because everyone can make a difference."
