Hundreds of dollars for a cake may seem like a bit too much for anything other than a wedding cake of the highest quality, but when it is for a good cause, Mighty Ninety Airmen are willing to dig deep.

Mighty Ninety Airmen, personnel and spouses attended the Warren Spouses Club's seventh annual "Dollars for Scholars" Basket Auction March 16 in the Fall Hall Community Center.

The auction raised money for scholarships for military dependents, said Wendy Bucy, Warren Spouses Club Welfare Organization ways and names chair and organizer of the event.

Items for auction included baskets of food, toiletries, wine and desserts for the guests at the event.

After the silent auction, the live dessert auction and the live basket auction, the total amount of money raised was approximately $15,000.

The Warren Spouses club solicits the local military and civilian community for basket donations to put up for auction, Bucy said.

"The club is very interested in morale and welfare of the Airmen on base, and they contribute to morale and welfare organizations that give back to the military as well as the civilian community," sheadded.

Lt. Col. Joyce Beaty, 90th Medical Support Squadron commander, attended the event with her husband, Jason Beaty.

"We came to support the wing spouses' club," Jason said. "Also, I'm a big believer in education. Better educated people make better citizens."

Senior base leadership often talks about the importance of education, Lt. Col. Beaty explained.

"It's an opportunity for them to put their money where their mouth is," she laughed.

"It's leading by example," her husband added.
