Justice Department reinforces federal protections for servicemembers and their spouses in letter to state officials

A graphic showing verbiage from the second page of a letter from the U.S. Justice Department notifying State Licensing Authorities on July 14, 2023, of a new provision in the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act about the portability of professional licenses for servicemembers and their spouses. The letter informs state licensing authorities about Congress’s recent amendment to the SCRA that allows servicemembers and their spouses to use their professional licenses or certificates in new jurisdictions if they are relocating because of military orders and meet certain other requirements.
